Jack Featured In Radio Program

Jack was recently featured on a radio program called Awakenings Denver. It was an hour long program where Jack discussed different aspects of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. We had a blast doing it. If you want to hear the program you can, for a short while go to this address http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-35965/TS-252587.mp3 or you can ask us and we will give you a CD of the show. In addition, it will be up on our web page pretty soon.

Flu Season Coming

Just a quick reminder that flu season is coming on, and with the prevalence of the Swine Flu, H1N1, it is very important that everyone take precautions. The common ones are to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, frequently wash your hands, do not eat out of those tempting free sample trays at area stores (they are breeding grounds for bacteria), and if you feel at all sick, please do not go to work or school. In an effort to "gut it out" people unknowingly spread sicknesses all around them when they go out. If you do get sick, luckily there are some great Chinese medicinal approaches to getting you better!

Extending Our Reach Through Public Education

by Kim Hayashi

Did you know that our goal of helping everyone we can, one person at a time, extends far beyond the clinic’s walls? As members of the Foundation for Wellness Professionals, a non-profit organization that focuses on community education, we believe in taking our medicine “to the streets.” Promoting self-responsibility for one’s health, through education is something that Mountain West Wellness is passionate about. We view it as a privilege to share our knowledge and expertise with everyone we possibly can, helping to insure that all of us can obtain and maintain optimum health.
This year alone we have conducted over 50 Health & Wellness Screenings and Lectures anywhere from the Sunflower Market and Curves for Women to the City of Arvada and the Lafayette Recreation Center. We know that everyone’s health concerns are different and that is why we offer educational seminars on a wide variety of topics, including stress, pain, digestive problems and Fibromyalgia.
Our educational program has also expanded this year to include in-house talks held here at the office. They are a great way to receive further health related information that supplements what is provided during regular office appointments. Best of all, friends and family members are welcome to attend. Check out our newsletter to see what is coming up or ask Kim for updates. If you see us out and about, don’t be shy about coming up and saying hello! If you know of a business or organization that would be interested in having us come out and talk, let us know. We are always happy to educate the public and share with them the benefits that can be derived from Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine.

We are also currently taking topic suggestions for in office workshops. Please let us know if there is one you are interested in.

Chinese Medicine and Women’s Health

A by Julie Gwyther MSOM LAc

A lot of people are not aware of the extent of how Chinese medicine can help with women’s health issues. Gynecology has been a field of specialization in Chinese medicine since the medicine’s inception thousands of years ago. Chinese medicine offers the opportunity for women to treat their health conditions in a safe, drug-free, and holistic manner by emphasizing treating the root of a condition rather than masking a symptom.
There is often an underestimation of the need to treat some gynecological conditions. Many conditions are common to women, but this does not imply that these conditions are normal. Also seeking treatment for a present condition can prevent something more serious from developing.
Traditional Chinese medicine is recognized by the World Health Organization as being especially effective at treating menstrual pain, menstrual irregularity, PMS, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), endometriosis, infertility, and menopausal syndrome. Acupuncture creates balance in the body by affecting the circulatory, nervous, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems. Hormonal imbalances play a role in many of women’s health concerns. By regulating the endocrine system acupuncture can treat the root of these conditions as opposed to merely covering up a symptom. For example, in treating menopause, a deficiency of estrogen can be helped not by adding foreign hormones to the body, but by strengthening the body’s ability to make its own hormones in other glands such as the adrenals.
Surgery or prescription and over-the-counter medications are not appropriate for every woman’s health concern and often pose unnecessary risks and side effects. For example, subjecting a body to high doses of ibuprofen every month for several days as a way of managing painful menstruation poses the risk of intestinal bleeding and liver toxicity. Multiplying this ibuprofen exposure by the number of years a woman has had painful menstruation creates a situation where other health concerns may appear as a result of this medication.
This ancient medicine offers an invitation to not only rid the body of symptoms, but also reestablish the health and vitality that each woman deserves.
