Fertility and Acupuncture

The use of acupuncture to enhance fertility is a very hot topic these days. This is because according to the National Center for Health Statistics 9.3 million American women are using assisted reproductive technologies to help them conceive a child, and many more are helplessly trying without the aid of medicine. Every year we help many families through this journey.

Recently a very widely published German study found that using acupuncture with IVF achieved a 42% pregnancy rate while IVF alone only achieved a 26% pregnancy rate. In addition, when acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy are used in conjunction with IVF, clinical experiences suggest at least a 60% rate of pregnancy.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are thought to help improve pregnancy rates in many ways:
1. Improving ovarian function.
2. Helping to regulate hormones.
3. Increasing uterine blood flow.
4. Decreasing the odds of miscarriage.
5. Helping to prevent early uterine contractions.
6. Strengthen a woman's immune system.
7. Help to manage the emotional stress.

In men acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help to improve sperm count, motility, and liquifaction rates.
Generally we start by trying to regulate and normalize a woman's menstrual cycle, strengthen her immune system, and reduce stress.

Once regulation is accomplished the focus is on conception, this can be naturally done, or with the use of IUI, or IVF. After conception Chinese medicine is very useful in preventing miscarriage.
